Attila On sieges in Total War: Attila, self. I don’t like them. Funneling an army with more than a handful of units through constipated side streets is a nightmare. I usually end up autoresolving or waiting for the enemy to sally out. Any advice on how to make them more tolerable? I often hear people talking up siege battles as the best part of TW games, but I just don’t see it. Unrelated: So the game shows the stats of a unit when you hover your mouse over it, right. What I’m wondering is whether it’s for each individual soldier or the entire unit.

If you are fighting a faction like the Romans, assaulting their formation in the streets directly will guarantee heavy losses for you, this is where they specialize. Change your tactics. Bring siege equipment, you can either break down a wall to create more opening to flank your opponents. Bring archers with heavy shots or crossbowmen and just rain death upon the enemy. Once they have taken losses, they are more vulnerable to moral shock and a powerful charge from a shock cavalry or an infantry with high charge may rout them, or make them very close to routing.

Some units have the ability to set buildings on fire, if you destroy many buildings it will affect the enemy’s moral as well as create new openings to move your troops around. On the defensive side of a siege, you want to block the main streets, but you also want to strip your opponent of any advantage he might have.

Hide guerrilla deployment units outside the walls and surprise his catapults and archers. Flank his units as they are pinned down against you in the streets, or rush the enemy general to cause panic. I usually use at minimum 3. Also, any and every city that can be blockaded by sea, must be. It helps so much to land a few marines and cause havoc, or reign arty from the sea. This assumes that I have siege equipment available. What about early on in the campaign when I can’t produce any yet?

There’s a reason why they added siege escalation in Attila. Siege a couple of turns until the wall is in shambles and a couple towers have fallen already. Surround from all sides. Overwhelm and destroy the defenders. Mercenary onagers are available everywhere even early. Hire one for the siege, then disband it later.

Have it kill whatever towers are in your direct path use raider units to take down lightly undefended towers that are guarding flanking paths if its an unwalled settlement , then pepper the defenders with other ranged units and flank via the paths u cleared with your raiders.

You can also simply keep them besieged for a few turns. The settlement takes damage every turn, so after a while, some walls will be broken and some tower will have fallen, giving you an opening to attack them from multiple direction and surround them. The buildings will also have taken damage, which will affect the besieged troops morale, making them easier to rout. If you are still not certain you can take them on in a siege battle, even after a few walls broke down, waiting for them to sally out is also a possibility, though a time consuming one.

The solution to your problems are Bring siege equipment: Onagers Onagers Onagers. If you’re fighting in a port – you can also bring naval artillery or otherwise flank via naval landing. Bring onagers to break through, bring a lot of other ranged units to pepper the enemy that simply sits in the streets doing nothing. If you’ve got the ammo to spare, then burn the city and watch their morale tank. My advice would first be to get the “Weaker Towers” mod, as imo it makes both offensive and defensive siege battles far more interesting as you need to rely on unit positioning and other tactics besides playing some sort of tower defence game with the towers being as OP as they are.

They are a ridiculous death trap and should be avoided at all costs. Focus your attacks on the walls and capture the gates from the inside if you want to, but never attack gates head on from the outside.

As such, don’t bring rams as they aren’t worth it. These will not only allow you to make breaches in the wall, which are easier to capture than the walls otherwise would be with towers alone as more men can attack a breach at once than can come out of a tower. Moreover, they can be used to bombard enemy units that are inside the walls if you have line of sight on them, which is a great way to get a lot of kills as the AI tends to bunch its units up.

Lastly, they can be used to burn down the city, which seriously damages the morale and fighting ability of the defending units, although it means the city will require a fair bit of money to repair once you capture it.

As such it can be a good idea to distract the AI with a diversionary attack preferably with your tankier units to entice it to bringing all its units to defend that one point thus weakening other positions or leaving them undefended, making them easier to take for you.

Once inside, you can attack the AI from behind, thus rescuing your diversionary units. I don’t much like modding stuff that could be considered game ‘features’ because it feels a bit cheaty.

Not a poke at anyone’s way of playing, I’m just weird like that. It’s not really cheating because it effects both you and the enemy. Your towers when defending will be weaker too. I despise towers, they are overpowered in my opinion, I always make them weaker. You can easily use siege escalation to make towers a non-issue. If OP doesn’t want to use mods. Perhaps I just haven’t done enough of them for the ennui to set in, but I’ve found sieges in Atilla battles in Attilla generally, actually to be fun and full of interesting decisions.

I think Attila was designed to encourage longer sieges, although it’s not readily apparent on your first few hours of play. Turn after turn the walls begin to fall apart giving more openings in their defense. When numbers are even the odds still go with the defender, as they should. So if you try to resolve a siege in one turn, you need serious numbers. The single mercenary Onager you’re attacking with will leave you struggling to beat even a garrison army without massive losses.

Likewise, if you’re defending and a full stack attacks your garrison with just one Onager and no ladders, play it out. They’ll likely use all of their ammo destroying towers and only rush the gate. A few heavy troops can turn those gates in to Thermopylae, only you will probably actually win. Ignore autoresolve chances in those cases. Raider units specifically have a skill that takes towers fast. Choke point side streets are supposed to be a defender’s advantage. As for advice I can give a few tips I’ve picked up from playing.
